Mary Helen Milligan (Fidler)

October 5th, 1951 - April 18th, 2017

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mary Helen Milligan (Nee Fidler) on April 18, 2017, surrounded by her family. Mary was born October 5, 1951 in Kinistino, Saskatchewan, the youngest of 5 children to Doug and Susan Fidler. Mary grew up on the family farm north of Kinistino in the Horseshoe Bend District where she worked and went to school. It was during this time that she met and later married Lorne Milligan on April 28, 1973. Lorne and Mary spent a brief period living and working in B.C. where they had their first son Christopher in 1973. A short time thereafter Lorne, Mary and Christopher returned to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan where their daughter Bernice was born in 1978. Mom began work with the Federal Government (Indian and Northern Affairs) and travelled extensively throughout Canada and Northern Saskatchewan as a Treaty Governance Officer for 31 years until her retirement in January 2014. Mary was gentle and kind and genuinely cared for those around her. She especially enjoyed being around family, and their door was always open to anyone stopping by for coffee or to sit by the fire roasting a hot dog. Mary was blessed with 3 grandsons Ashton, Tayler and Reece Milligan. She was the biggest supporter of her grandson’s sports. You could always find her under an umbrella at the side of a field or sipping a coffee in a gymnasium or cold arena... no matter the weather or the distance Grandma was there. In 2004 Lorne and Mary realized a life-long dream and purchased an acreage in Holbein, Saskatchewan where they would spend their days and evenings tending to the garden, her flowers, the horses or simply enjoying the peacefulness of “country living”. Mary is survived by her loving husband Lorne; their two children Christopher (Connie) Milligan and Bernice Milligan; 3 grandchildren Ashton Milligan, Tayler Milligan and Reece Milligan; brothers Robert (Marion) Fidler and Leslie (Bev) Fidler; sister Jeanette (Neal) Brackhan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents Douglas and Susan Fidler; brother Dennis Fidler; her grandparents Robert and Nancy Cook, and John and Eliza Fidler; mother and father in-law Violet and Raymond Milligan. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 24, 2017 at the Shellbrook Pentecostal Church, 61 – 2nd Street West, Shellbrook, SK with Pastor Dave Bodvarson officiating. Interment will be at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens, Hwy #2 South, Prince Albert, SK. In lieu of other tributes, the family requests any donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. We would also like to extend a special thank you to the Level 5 Doctors and Nurses at the Victoria Hospital, as well as the Doctors and staff at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray's Funeral Chapel, (306-922-4729).
