History and the Bible

At one time I didn’t enjoy studying history but since I began to study the Biblical view of history it has sparked a new interest that never grows old.  History is really God’s story of the human race. When the God factor is added to history it becomes very interesting and exciting.  One of the most amazing facts of history I’ve learned since becoming a Christian is that the world we live in is only about 10,000 years old.   We have been pumped the deceptive lie that the world is millions and millions of years old.  After years of careful study, I am totally convinced it is only several thousand, not millions and billions of years old.  I challenge you to look up the link to Answers in Genesis web site www.answersingenesis.org . I think you will find it very interesting as you look at the Biblical perspective of the creation account versus the evolution account that we were all taught in school, and expected to blindly accept as truth.  We never thought to ask if there was any other perspective on the history of the universe. The facts that creation organizations such as Answers in Genesis have dug up are truly amazing, and provide very convincing arguments for creation versus evolution.  The matter of faith really starts with answering the question: Who created the world?  Who is the creator and can you know who it is? Was it God or another source?  I promise that if you give this question some serious consideration it will not be long until you’ll be convinced that the universe was created by a very intelligent source with a genius mind and plan.  Who was it?  It was God and there is much evidence to prove it.

The other thing I have gleaned through my study of history, looking through the lens of the Biblical view, is that a flood destroyed the world about 2000 years after it was created.  I used to think the Noah flood idea was a stretch, however, after years of study and examining facts and more facts, there is a mountain of evidence to prove a flood covered the entire earth. Afterwards, the human race had a second origin through the family of Noah. Dinosaur fossils and thousands of other fossils found in countless places on earth, is evidence there was a flood that covered the entire globe.  What is more amazing is that the population of the earth, at the time of the flood, was probably similar in numbers to today’s population. As mentioned, the earth was approximately 2000 years old when God sent a flood upon a world of wickedness.  It is easy to determine the age of the earth using the Bible and recorded genealogies tracing all the way back to Adam and Eve.  God included necessary genealogies so these facts could be proved.

Another amazing truth about the time before the flood is that the average life span was close to 1000 years and families continued to grow during that entire time.  Chapter five of Genesis details this. Imagine the potential for population growth when couples would reproduce for several hundred years.  Genesis records men like Adam living 930 years, Seth living 912 years, Enos living 905 years, Cainan living 910 years, Methusalah living 969 years.  It simply says these men lived this long and had sons and daughters.  If you use just simple math multiplication these families would be having children and their children would be having families and their great grandchildren would be having families.  Can you imagine the family reunions there would be, possibly with several thousand in attendance.  During the second millennium of prior flood history there would have been a staggering population explosion.

It is also interesting that in Genesis, chapter six, the sins are identified which brought judgement on the world. These were perverted sexual sins, violence, which filled the earth, and corruption of God’s way on the earth by mankind.  God had made a way for men and women to marry and have families but mankind corrupted and perverted his way.  Hmmm, does this remind you of somewhere?  It says that mankind thought evil all the time, and because of his evil thinking digressed into animal-like behaviour. It says God was sorry he made mankind. He destroyed it all except an ark/ship full of animals and one family to start things all over again.   Answers in Genesis has built a copy of Noah’s Ark in Williamstown, Kentucky, at the cost of almost 100 million dollars.  My wife and I went there a few years ago to see this amazing structure.  Google www.thearkencounter.org to find lots of information on it. This Ark was built exactly to the dimensions outlined in Genesis, about the size of two football fields.  Our guide said that 4500-7000 people visit the Ark every day. It is well worth making a trip to see it. It takes about 3 hours to tour the Ark and, when you leave, you know you have observed a present-day wonder of the world.  This huge Ark, or ship, is a testament that the Bible is true and that God indeed judged the earth for sinful living.  The rainbow in the sky is also recorded in Genesis as a token sign of promise that God would never again judge the earth with a flood.  However, he will judge the world again, not with water but with seven years of tribulation.  This is outlined in the book of Revelation.

It is also very interesting that the Lord Jesus Christ, when he was on earth, made statements that, at first do not seem that significant, but really are very significant to understand the time when he returns to judge the earth again:

Luke 17:26: “And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man” (meaning when Christ returns to earth in the future).

Luke 17:27: “They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.”

Jesus gave this instruction to his followers to let them know what the end of the age we are now living in would be like.  From this New Testament account, Jesus shared another perspective about the pre-flood days that’s not recorded in Genesis.  He added insight as to how the population was living.  They were living life as usual, eating, drinking, getting married, until Noah entered the Ark with his family. However, we know in the Genesis account that the earth was corrupt with violence and wickedness.  Does this remind you of our generation?   We also learn in the New Testament that Noah was a preacher for 120 years.  He was preaching in different places while the Ark was being constructed, telling people of a coming judgment and the need to repent and get on the Ark.  However, it is evident they did not believe him or listen to his message of salvation with any serious thought or repentance, just like most people in our world today do not believe in or listen to a salvation message.

It also states that it never rained before the Noah flood.  When it did start to rain, people became concerned and tried to get on the Ark.  Genesis 7:16 says that the Lord, after Noah and his family were in,  closed the door of the Ark so no one else could get in. As mentioned in Luke 17:26 above,  Jesus said that as it was in the days of Noah so shall it be in the days of the coming of the Son of Man. Most people will wait until it is too late to try to seek truth about what to do.  Today the Ark type is Jesus Christ.  He is the door of salvation, his church is the Ark of safety to ride out the storms, and the people inside are safe.  Jesus said of himself: “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved…”(John 10:9).

Jesus also said, in the same context of his teaching on the days of Noah, that we are to be ready. “Therefore be you also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man will come” (Matthew 24:44).  If you want true history, go to the Bible.  If you want truth about religion, go to the Bible.  If you are seeking truth about future events and prophecy, go to the Bible.   If you are seeking truth about life, go to the Bible.
