The Holocaust memorial begins at sunset April 7th and goes to sunset on April 8th each year in Israel. It is a memorial to the Holocaust, one of the most unbelievable events to take place in modern history, where over 6 million Jews were murdered by under the rule of Adolf Hitler. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were rounded up and transported to death camps. Then, after being killed in the gas chambers, their bodies were burned in huge gas incinerators. Other Jews were massacred by mass shootings by the Nazis. It was one of the greatest evils ever committed against humanity. One of the reasons Israel has the Holocaust memorial each year is to remind people everywhere that we need to be on the watch for evil and be prepared to resist it. The only way evil can be deterred is with a right power and vigilance. To misunderstand the nature and threat of evil is to risk being blindsided by it again. The world was blindsided by Hitler and his plan to conquer Europe and annihilate the Jewish race.
While it was the goal of Hitler to annihilate the Jews, he also wanted global domination. He shocked the world when he invaded Poland in 1939 and began systematically rounding up Jews and sending them to the death camps in Germany. Hitler came very close to gaining his objective and, if he had, we would all be in a German speaking world today and there would be no Jews anywhere to be found. However, God has made promises to the Jews still to be fulfilled. One promise to be fulfilled is the borders of Israel will go from the Nile in Egypt to the Euphrates River in Iraq. The borders of Israel will be greatly enlarged at a future date.
I want to inform you about some heroes from the Holocaust death camps. There were four men who escaped from the Auschwitz death camp and then warned those who were able to intervene in time to save over 120,000 Jews from Hungary. They were Arnost Rosin, Alfred Wetzler, Czeslaw Mordowicz and Rudolf Vrba, names of men that few in the world will recognize or have ever heard of. They made a daring escape from Auschwitz, got to Hungary in time to warn the Jews what was in store for them if they were to get on the trains. The Jews were being lied to about the trains. One of the lies was they were being repositioned for another purpose. This reminds us that we need to be vigilant about what we are hearing from government even today as not all we hear is truth. There were other heroic stories from the Holocaust era that need to be mentioned. One is Oscar Schindler from Poland who was able to save over 1200 Jews from the death camps. There was a famous movie about him called Schindler’s List. Another hero was a Christian lady from the Netherlands, Corrie Ten Boom, who saved Jews by hiding them in her home. Her book The Hiding Place recounts her family’s efforts to save Jews and how she was discovered by the Nazis and imprisoned in the Ravnesbruck Concentration Camp.
When my wife and I had the privilege of visiting Jerusalem several years ago, we toured the Holocaust Museum. The visit there left a permanent memory in my mind. It is the only museum tour you will visit where you see people weeping and sobbing after seeing the evidence and photos of so many families experimented on by German scientists before murdering them. The Jewish people want the museum to be a reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust never to be forgotten, with hopes the evil will never happen again. Around the Holocaust Museum there are olive trees planted with a name plate at the base of each one of those who helped to save Jews during the Holocaust. One of the trees had Corrie Ten Boom at its base. The guide told us that the year that Corrie died her olive tree also died. What an interesting coincidence that the One who is over all life is watching.
The questions I used to have in my mind about the Jews was why have the Jews gone through such suffering? Why were the Jews so hated by Hitler? What was behind such a horrible evil against so many innocent people? I had all of those questions answered once I became a Christian and began to study the Bible. It is the greatest history book ever written because God had it written and all history is God’s history. I will try to answer some of these questions for you in few words.
First, if there is evidence the Bible is true in one word it would be “Israel”. There are lots of other solid evidences why the Bible is true but you would only need Israel to confirm that the Bible is really the words of a supernatural book. Israel is the nation of God’s chosen people. The Jewish people were given many promises of benefits and privileges as God’s chosen people. The Jews as a race have probably offered more scientific, academic and economic wisdom to the world than any other race of people. Their little sliver of land in the middle east is the most contested and disputed piece of real estate in the world. Where they operate the country usually ends up in leadership positions in financial institutions and industry. One person told me that before the Jews were exterminated from Poland that country was a successful economic power in the world. Since the Jews have been removed it has been in chaos and economic desperation ever since. The Jews economic success and wisdom is one reason they are hated but not the main reason. The deep-seated reason they are hated is found in the book of Genesis. God promised that through Abraham a nation would be born through the child of promise which was Isaac.
Galatians 4:28: Now we [Jews], brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. They have been hated all through history since that promise and are still hated today by many.
The book of Esther clearly shows the hatred of someone from another race who has a determination to destroy the Jewish people. There have been many attempts to annihilate them by nation after nation. Even today we have rhetoric out of Iran and nations of the middle east who say the world would be a better place with Israel out of the picture. However, what these enemies do not understand is that God still has the Jews in the picture and still has them solidly in his plan still to be fulfilled. The deep-rooted hatred against the Jews is a God versus Satan hatred and Satan’s hatred will be forever against them until Jesus Christ returns to earth as King of Kings and Lord of Lords and establishes his Kingdom on this earth. Israel and the Jewish people will then have the long-promised covenant fulfilled where all the nations in the world will be ruled out of Jerusalem for 1000 years. Satan knows this and knows he only has numbered days to vent his hatred. This is all clearly taught in both the Old and New Testaments. The hatred of Satan was also against the Lord Jesus Christ while on earth. Satan thought he was destroying Christ at the crucifixion but actually he was sealing his own doom because when Christ died, and rose again, he defeated Satan. This is complicated to understand this and cannot be explained in this writing.
John 12:31: Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world [Satan] be cast out.
John 16:11: Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. Satan is called the prince of this world right now but will soon lose his position of ruling by the Prince of life explained here:
Acts 3:15: And killed the Prince of life, whom God has raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
Acts 5:31: Him [Christ] has God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
God sent the Prince of Life, Jesus Christ, to be the Messiah of the Jews. Israel made a big mistake by not accepting him as the promised Messiah. They rejected Him and the consequences of their rejection and consenting to his death on the cross is another reason they have been so hated and persecuted for 2000 years. The lesson we can learn from this is: if God is allowing that to happen with his own chosen people with 6 million people killed and instances of other atrocities toward the Jewish people, then it is a lesson for us if we reject the offer of the Prince of Life we too will suffer the consequences. Hell will be much worse than even the Holocaust. To be continued…
God bless you all until next week. Remember, God can change everything but it starts with you
