Hey Its Good To Be Back Home Again…

While travelling and stopping to eat along the way, we came across a “Tidbits” paper in which I found a very interesting article containing facts which I had never heard before, and thought I would like to share them with you.  Being a product of “the 50’s and 60’s”, I was most interested to learn some facts about Paul Anka.  I had been aware that he is a Canadian who made it big in the music industry.  The songs he recorded were among the most popular of the time.  “Diana” skyrocketed to Number One on the charts making him a Teen Idol when he was only 16 years old.   I was not aware, however, that he is a songwriter inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in the U.S.A. in 1993 and into the Canadian Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2008.  Did you know that the Buddy Holly hit “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” which he recorded shortly before his fatal plane crash in 1959, was written by 18 year old Paul Anka?  At 19, as well as playing the part as an army private in the film “The Longest Day”, he wrote the theme song to the hit and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song.   He wrote more than 900 songs, including Frank Sinatra’s signature tune “My Way” as well as “Fly Me to the Moon” and “I’ve Gotta be Me”,  and Tom Jones’ biggest hit “She’s a Lady”.  I have heard Elvis Presley sing “Blue Christmas” every Christmas for my whole adult life and did not realize this wonderful song was written by none other than Paul Anka!  Another interesting fact is that he has had the distinction of having a song on the Billboard charts in every decade since his 1957 debut, including singles in the Top 50 during five different decades.  He has recorded 125 albums including songs in Japanese, German, Spanish, French and Italian.    Worldwide, he has sold more than 15 million records.  At 72, he still performs on a regular basis as well as appearing on a motivational speaker circuit.   What a fantastic career!

As another travelling point of interest, we stopped at the Legends Café in Golden for a noon meal on our way home, having eaten at McDonalds A & W and Burger King for most of our trip.  We were not disappointed with the ambiance, and our waitress did her job as well as any could.  However, it was very distressing to sit there for almost an hour, waiting for an omelet with hashbrowns and bacon and eggs with hashbrowns when most of the other patrons in the establishment had already been served and there were few other newcomers than us. The young male cook who was within our line of vision at the grill was chatting with an older woman obviously  the wife of the owner, doing nothing that we could interpret as cooking, and there was no obvious reason why he could not have had our meal out to us within 15 minutes of our arrival.  At about the moment we were thinking of leaving without eating, our waitress rattled his chains and within minutes our plates arrived at our table.  John did not hesitate to mention to the owner at the till who asked how everything was, as he paid on the way out, that the service from the waitress was fantastic but the cook should be FIRED!!!

We are looking forward to having two of our grandchildren stay with us this week while their parents are enjoying their first vacation in Las Vegas!  The parents have looked forward to this for a long time and finally they were on their way.  We are looking forward to the kids being here as they are growing up so quickly and with us being away so much, we do not have an opportunity for them to sleep over.  We often go to town for coffee in the morning, so driving them to school will not be a problem.  Going to Las Vegas once in my lifetime, just to see what it looks like, is on my bucket list too, but for my husband, not so much…
