Poetry is not exactly the “rock star” of the literary world, and in Prince Albert it would be difficult to fill a room at a poetry reading and book launch. However, last week that is exactly what happened when my good friend Lynda Monahan launched her third book of poetry, Verge. I was pleased to attend Lynda’s event and it was obvious that many other people in this community feel the same way about this lady.
Since March 9, I have been spending several hours a day at the Victoria Hospital here in Prince Albert. My sister underwent emergency surgery and several complications set in which has resulted in her spending the past four weeks between the intensive care unit and the fourth floor.
The Canadian Cancer Society is once again selling its daffodil pin. It is made up of the Cancer Society’s yellow daffodil symbol re-styled onto a very attractive pin. The daffodil pin is proudly displayed on lapels and jackets. They are available in many locations throughout the month of April and are sold by donation.
Wednesday, April 1st is Day of Pink in Saskatchewan. This is a day set aside to bring attention to bullying and to celebrate and encourage respect. Throughout our province and in our city, many people including civic leaders, office workers, teachers and students show their opposition to bullying by wearing pink shirts. It is a visual way in which to remind people to be kind to each other and that bullying is harmful. Education is important to the prevention of this type of abuse, and the Day of Pink is a time to have conversations about this issue and to teach people how to prevent bullying and what to do if they witness it.
It's almost too good to be true! For those of us who have weight issues and who eat when we are under stress, the medical community is finding that sometimes stress-eating is ok! Well, okay, you DO have to eat the right foods - not chocolate, or cake or chips. There are some foods that actually work to calm you down when your stress level is rising and some that keep your body in its best condition so that when stress hits you, you can handle it.
